History

The city was home to many maharajas. Jodhpur first came into existence in 1459 and named after the Chief of Rathore Clan, Rao Jodha. It was previously known as Marwar. Later on Jodhpur flourish under British raj and became the largest cities in Rajasthan. Under British Reign, the merchants of Jodhpur especially the Marwari flourish and occupied a dominant position in trade. After India independence in 1947, state merged into India and become 2nd largest city of Rajasthan.
