History

The city was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh who was king of Ajmer. The city was named after his name ‘Jai’. Under his ruling, the capital of the city was Amber but later because of increase in population and water shortage, the capital shifted to Jaipur. Maharaja Jai Singh carefully designed the layout of the city. He consulted various architectural books and planned a scientific & cultural to make this beautiful city. With four year of planning this beautiful city was constructed with major places, finest roads and square. Later during the reign of Sawai Ram Singh in order to greet Prince Edward and Queen Victoria the city was painted pink and got its name as “Pink City”.
