History

The City is derived from two words ‘Dehra’ and ‘Dun’ which mean ‘camping’ and ‘low lying land at mountain foot’. The town of Dehradun was founded by seventh Sikh guru Guru Ram Rai in early 17TH century. The name of the city is also refered in Ramayan and Mahabharata. As per the Hindu puran, Ram and Laxman visited the site after the epic battle with Ravan. The city was residence of royal guru in Mahabharata, Dhronacharya. One can see ancient temples nearby which is 2000 year old. Dehradun was an independent kingdom and was part of Nepal. When Britishers came and colonized India, Nepal lost Dehradun to England. In 1901, Dehradun became the district of British India of the Meerut division of united province.
