Chennai has a setback history to 1st century. Many south Indian Dynasty’s – Pallavas, Cholas, Pandas and Vijayanagara, ruled over city making it popular economic hub. In 16th and 17th century Portuguese and Dutch made their presence. In 1639, East Indian Company came to Chennai and settled in Madraspattinam. They build the town, George Town, along with the fort of St George later became a citadel in South. One of the oldest muncipipal corporations of India was built by G. Town in 1688. Later, the two cities, madraspattinam and Chennaipattinam was merged and renamed as madraspattinam. Doring their reign, Chennai was transformed into an urban city. In 1996, madraspattinam (or madras) was renamed as Chennai by state government of Tamil Nadu.
The name Chennai or chennaiapttinam was derived from Chenna Kesava Perumal Temple. The city is famous for its beaches; making it the major tourist destination of South India.
